As an immigrant born in Uganda, Africa- Lydia Kwagala was raised by her grandmother in a small town called Jinja which is famous for being the source of the Nile River.
Growing up with her grandmother played a big role in creating LKAY COLLECTIONS. Lydia watched her grandmother (who was a teacher) design and sew clothes for her less fortunate students and interested residents. The meticulous way her grandmother would pick a print and blend different patterns made Lydia fall more in love with fashion. It was the determination and dedication that her grandmother put into sewing that inspired Lydia to pursue a career in design.

Lydia would take the extra scraps from her grandmother’s sewing projects to design clothes for her little dolls. And during her high school days in Uganda, Lydia continued to explore her passion for design.

“I remember boarding the plane to the US in 2010. Upon my arrival my cousin introduced me to a show called Project. Runway that night after I’d settled in. Right away I admired everything the show had to offer from sketching to cutting & sewing different fabrics together. A month went by and I managed to save enough money to purchase my first sewing machine. I made a promise to myself to learn how to sew so that I could bring my designs to life. Sewing has always been my passion & I’m blessed to be part of this journey no matter how hard & difficult it may be when aiming for the stars” She had this strong belief that when you put your mind to something, you can achieve it.

Lydia welcomed her beautiful baby girl into the world on 3/1/2016, and it is then that she conceived the idea to start sketching MUMMY & ME outfits for the two of them. This new idea drove her to bring her sewing dreams to life and with each passing day Lydia’s skills and passion expanded and eventually grew into LKAY COLLECTIONS

Today through her fashion line, Lydia shares the beauty of blending Ankara prints with a modern twist; making every girl and woman feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin
